You're standing at the bathroom shelf holding two toothbrushes — the plastic one you've always used, and the "plant-based" one you bought at a refill shop because the packaging said it was better. You turn them both over, looking for the difference. The handles are obviously different: one bright plastic, one pale bamboo. The bristles look identical. That's because, in the way that matters most, they are. The castor oil bristles vs nylon comparison has a surprising answer, and it isn't the one the packaging implied.
Castor oil bristles are nylon. Bio-based nylon, made from a plant instead of a barrel of oil — but nylon all the same. So a fair comparison isn't really "plant bristle versus plastic bristle." It's "nylon made from castor beans versus nylon made from petroleum," with a third column the marketing rarely mentions: the bristles that aren't nylon at all. Are castor oil bristles the same as nylon?
Castor oil bristles are a synthetic nylon — usually polyamide-11 — made by polymerising a castor-oil-derived monomer in an industrial reactor. A PA11polyamide-11; the nylon most "castor oil bristles" are made from bristle and a conventional nylon-6the standard synthetic polyamide used in most petroleum toothbrush bristles bristle are both members of the same chemical family: polyamides, built from repeating amide bonds. The castor version starts its life as a bean rather than crude oil, but the molecule that ends up in your mouth is a plastic either way.
There are three castor-derived nylons in circulation, and which one a brand uses changes how much petroleum is still in the bristle. PA11fully bio-based nylon; both building blocks from castor is fully plant-fed. PA610nylon-6,10; only about 67% bio-based — the rest is petrochemical is roughly two-thirds plant, one-third petroleum. PA1010fully bio-based nylon made from two castor-derived monomers is fully plant-fed through different chemistry. The label almost never says which. All three are nylon; none of them biodegrades.

Line the three bristle types up against the attributes people actually care about and the pattern is clear: the two nylons behave almost identically, and the protein fibre is the one that behaves differently. The carbon source is where castor nylon wins; everything downstream of the reactor, it draws with petroleum nylon.

Do castor oil bristles shed fewer microplastics than nylon?
No — castor oil bristles shed microplastics at effectively the same rate as petroleum nylon, because they are the same polymer family and fragment by the same mechanism. A manual toothbrush releases somewhere between roughly 39 and several thousand microplastic particles per day during simulated brushing, and the polyamide fraction of oral-care products is around 30% of the particles released. Bio-based origin doesn't change the physics of a polymer bristle scraping across enamel twice a day.
Three peer-reviewed studies between 2023 and 2025 bridged the dental-wear literature and the microplastic-pollution literature for the first time. One group used Raman imaging to count particles released from manual toothbrushes during simulated brushing, and reported release running into the thousands per cycle Fang 2023. A second ran commercial brushes on a 3D-printed dental arch for seven days and measured an average of up to 39 microplastic particles released per day during simulated brushing (Öztürk Aytulun et al. 2025) particles a day Öztürk Aytulun et al. 2025. A third took brand-new brushes apart and found 30–120 microplastic particles embedded in a brand-new toothbrush head, before any human touched it particles already embedded per head, projecting annual exposure at roughly 48,910 projected microplastic particles per person per year from toothbrush use alone particles per person from toothbrushes alone Protyusha et al. 2024. None of these studies found the plant-derived nylons to be exempt.
The reason is mechanical. Synthetic polymer fibres fragment under mechanical action; natural keratin fibres decompose biologically instead. That finding predates the toothbrush-specific work — nylon fibres were shown to shed microplastic particles under mechanical stress years earlier Napper & Thompson 2016. A castor-oil-derived amide bond is no more fragile — and no more digestible — than a petroleum-derived one. The bean changed the supply chain. It didn't change the bond.
Is castor oil nylon biodegradable when petroleum nylon isn't?
No. Neither castor oil nylon nor petroleum nylon is certified biodegradable under any composting or marine-biodegradation standard. PA11 holds no certification under EN 13432 industrial composting, ASTM D6400, or ASTM D6691 marine biodegradation. Its industrial selling point is the opposite of biodegradability: the same polymer lines offshore oil-and-gas pipelines specifically because it survives decades in seawater. Bio-based is a statement about where the carbon came from, not about where it ends up.
Regulators have put this in writing. The EU's Single-Use Plastics Directive defines plastic to include "biobased and biodegradable plastics," carving out only natural polymers that have not been chemically modified — and polymerising a castor monomer into PA11 is exactly the chemical modification the carve-out excludes EU Plastic 2019. In the UK, the Advertising Standards Authority upheld a complaint against a toothbrush brand marketing bioplastic bristles as "plastic-free" and "#NoPlastic" UK Ruled misleading 2022. Plant-based plastic is still plastic, and two regulators have said so on the record.
Do castor oil bristles feel different or clean better than nylon?
On the gum, castor oil nylon and petroleum nylon feel and clean about the same — because they are engineered to the same stiffness and end-rounding. Bristle performance is driven by diameter, taper, and technique far more than by which feedstock the polymer came from. The material a bristle is made of barely moves plaque-removal numbers in controlled comparisons; what moves them is technique and whether the bristle is soft enough to spare the gum — which is why dental bodies recommend soft bristles in the first place.
Where keratin genuinely differs is in the tip. A boar or horsehair bristle has a naturally tapered end that thins toward the point; extruded nylon — castor or petroleum — is cut flat, with a uniform circular cross-section. The tapered tip is why natural bristle feels softer and reaches slightly into the gum margin rather than dragging across it. That's a texture-and-tissue difference, not a cleaning-power difference: soft bristles clean comparably while abrading the gum less, and gum recession, once it starts, doesn't reverse.
So is one actually better?
It depends entirely on what you're optimising for, and the honest answer splits three ways rather than two. If your priority is a lower fossil-carbon footprint and you're comparing bristle to bristle, castor oil nylon beats petroleum nylon — same performance, plant-derived carbon. Watch If your priority is keeping synthetic microplastics out of your mouth and your wastewater, the two nylons are a draw, and neither wins: both shed. Only a non-polymer bristle changes that answer.
