4 substances we don't use.
The Bamboo Toothbrush Holder is free from Plastic (polypropylene / melamine), Lacquer / sealant coatings, Silicone grips and inserts and Metal components. Each exclusion is explained below with the reason.
Plastic (polypropylene / melamine)
Most toothbrush holders are polypropylene plastic or melamine-coated. Both degrade in the humid bathroom environment and can leach trace chemicals. This is 100% solid bamboo.
Lacquer / sealant coatings
No polyurethane, no paraffin wax. Even holders marketed as ‘uncoated’ or ‘natural finish’ often have a clear sealant applied that isn’t disclosed — it prevents darkening but seals in the antimicrobial bio-agent. Raw bamboo breathes — exactly what a toothbrush needs for airflow drying.
Silicone grips and inserts
Many ’eco’ holders use silicone bases or grip rings. Silicone is a synthetic polymer that can release trace siloxanes, especially with warm water contact. Solid bamboo grips by shape alone.
Metal components
No metal base, no spring mechanism, no screw fittings. Single piece of bamboo — nothing to corrode in a wet bathroom.

Getting started.
Place on a dry surface
Bathroom shelf, windowsill, anywhere the base won’t sit in pooled water. The holder needs airflow underneath.
Insert your toothbrush
Bristle-end up. The slot holds standard toothbrushes snugly. Bamboo, plastic, any manual brush.
Wipe dry weekly
Run a dry cloth around the base once a week. Keeps any water spots from building up. Takes five seconds.
The first 6–12 months weeks.
Fresh bamboo
Light colour, smooth finish. May have a faint natural bamboo scent for the first few days — this fades quickly.
Settled in
The bamboo may darken very slightly where it contacts water. This is natural patina, not damage. The holder is fully functional and stable.
Well-used
Noticeable colour deepening. Still structurally sound. If it starts to feel rough, a light sand with fine sandpaper brings it back. Most holders last years.
7 questions answered.
The one that lets your brush dry properly. Sealed containers and plastic cups trap moisture and increase bacterial contamination (Frazelle & Munshi, 2012). Open-air bamboo storage with natural antimicrobial properties is the optimal combination — airflow plus active bacterial inhibition from the bamboo’s bio-agent ‘kun’.
Designed for standard manual toothbrushes. Electric brush heads may not fit depending on the model.
Bamboo contains a bio-agent called ‘kun’ that inhibits bacterial and fungal growth. Wipe it dry occasionally and it’ll last. Don’t leave it sitting in pooled water.
One slot. If you need to hold more, grab a second one.
Years with normal use. Bamboo darkens slightly over time — that’s natural and doesn’t affect function.
No. Hand wash with warm water and dry upright. Dishwashers will crack the bamboo.
Compost it. It’s solid bamboo — it’ll break down in a few months in a home compost.
The bottom line
The Bamboo Toothbrush Holder is made from Bamboo. Free from Plastic (polypropylene / melamine), Lacquer / sealant coatings, Silicone grips and inserts. Every material is published on this page with the research behind each choice.
Frazelle & Munshi (2012)
Journal of Dental Hygiene
Toothbrushes stored in open air had significantly lower bacterial contamination than those stored in closed containers — ventilation is the key factor
Karibasappa et al. (2011)
Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research
Contaminated toothbrushes can act as reservoirs for oral and environmental microorganisms — proper storage and regular replacement reduce recontamination risk
Afrin T, Tsuzuki T, Kanwar RK, Wang X (2012)
Journal of Textile Science & Engineering
Bamboo fibre contains the antimicrobial bio-agent ‘kun’ which inhibits bacterial growth without any chemical treatment. The property is inherent to the raw material and is retained when the bamboo is uncoated. Coating bamboo with lacquer or wax seals this agent in. A raw bamboo toothbrush holder actively suppresses bacterial accumulation between uses.
