There is a friendly correction buried in the phrase bamboo vs boar bristle toothbrush, and it is worth making before anything else: those two things are not alternatives. Bamboo is what the handle is made of. Boar is what the bristles are made of. They sit at opposite ends of the same brush — and on ours, they sit on the same brush. Our boar bristle toothbrush has a bamboo handle. So do most boar bristle brushes sold anywhere. Asking which to buy is a bit like asking whether you want a wooden chair or a padded seat.
The question underneath it is a genuinely good one, though, and almost nobody answers it straight. Nearly every brush sold as bamboo has a bamboo handle and nylon bristles. So what the search actually means is: bamboo handle with nylon bristles, or bamboo handle with boar bristles? That is a real comparison. It turns on two things that are hardly ever printed on a package — what the bristles are made of, and what is holding them into the wood.
What is a bamboo toothbrush actually made of?
A toothbrush is three separate decisions wearing one name. There is the handle, the bristle, and whatever anchors the bristle to the handle. The word bamboo answers the first of those three and says nothing at all about the other two — which is convenient, because the other two are the parts that go in your mouth.
Nobody set out to mislead anyone; it is just how the category grew. Bamboo replaced polypropylene in the part of the brush that was easiest to replace, and the marketing followed the handle because the handle is what you can photograph. The bristle stayed nylon because nylon is cheap, uniform, and the machinery already existed. The glue stayed glue because nobody was asking.

Does the word bamboo even settle the handle?
Not entirely, which is the first sign that the word is doing less work than it appears to. Bamboo darkens as it takes on water and its tannins oxidise, and a darkened handle reads as dirty to a lot of buyers even though nothing is wrong with it. The standard fix is to seal the handle — polyurethane lacquer, or a paraffin wax rub. Both keep the wood pale on a shelf. Both are petroleum derivatives, and both sit as a thin film against your lips every time you brush.
Almost nobody lists this either. A handle described as natural bamboo may be raw or it may be coated, and the packaging usually reads identically in both cases. Ours is left uncoated, so it darkens over a few weeks and there is no film between the wood and your mouth. It is the least consequential of the three decisions — the handle touches your lips, not your gum margin — but it is the same pattern as the other two: a material named on the front, a treatment not named anywhere.
What are the bristles on a bamboo toothbrush made of?
In the large majority of cases, nylon — usually nylon-6, a synthetic polyamide. It is extruded through a die at a constant diameter and then cut to length, which leaves every filament with a blunt circular face and a cut edge. That cut edge is present on nylon brushes at every firmness rating, including the ones sold as soft. Hair, by contrast, grows thinner toward its end, so a boar bristle arrives with a tapered tip that nobody had to manufacture.
The part that trips people up is the plant-based claim. A large number of bamboo brushes now advertise bristles derived from castor oil, which sounds like the natural option and is in fact polyamide 11 — a bio-sourced nylon. The feedstock is a plant; the material is a polymer. It behaves like nylon in your mouth, wears like nylon, and does not compost like a plant. If a page says natural bristles and then qualifies it somewhere smaller with plant-based, castor, or bio-based, you are looking at nylon.
This is where the shedding question comes in, and it is worth being precise rather than alarming. Napper and Thompson measured synthetic polymer fibres shedding under mechanical action in a washing machine, not in a mouth; nobody has run the equivalent study on brushing, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What the finding establishes is the mechanism: extruded polymer filaments fragment when they are worked against a surface, and keratin does not, because it decomposes biologically instead. Two minutes of that, twice a day, for two to three months per brush, is a structural contributor rather than a measured quantity. What is holding the bristles in?
Try to find this out for any bamboo brush you already own. It will not be on the packaging. It is very rarely on the product page. Ask the question by email and the answer is often that they will check with the factory.
The industry answer is one of six adhesive chemistries: epoxy resin, polyurethane, and four hot-melt types — ethylene-vinyl acetate, polyamide, reactive polyurethane, and styrene-isoprene-styrene. All are petroleum-derived. Epoxy is the most common, and epoxy contains bisphenol A diglycidyl ether, which is why our BPA article keeps turning up in conversations about toothbrushes. Conventional plastic brushes solve the same problem differently, with a metal staple clamping the tuft into the head.
The safety data sheets for these adhesives exist, and they assess skin contact and accidental ingestion. Your mouth is neither. The buccal mucosa is up to 4000 times more permeable than skin depending on the molecule and the region, non-keratinised, with direct vascular access — which is the reason sublingual medication works in minutes rather than hours (Shojaei, 1998). The exposure profile of a toothbrush is chronic, oral-mucosal, at body temperature, in a wet slightly acidic environment, for two to four minutes twice a day, for years. No adhesive used in this category has been studied under those conditions. That is not an accusation of harm; it is an absence of data, and we would rather name it than round it up or down.
Ours has no adhesive to disclose. Each tuft is compressed into a hole drilled slightly smaller than the tuft, and the bamboo grips it by friction. No epoxy, no polyurethane, no hot-melt, no staple. It is more machining, not less: the hole has to be sized to the tuft and the tolerance has to hold across a batch, where a glue line forgives a lot of variance. Everything else about the brush is ordinary — 19cm, about 12g, replace it every two to three months like any other.
Does boar bristle clean better than nylon?
Not as far as the one controlled trial we can find is concerned — and it goes against the natural bristle. Arai and colleagues (1977) compared natural pig bristle against nylon in twelve adults and measured disclosed plaque: nylon removed 59.6% against 42.3% for the natural bristle, a difference that reached statistical significance. It is a small, unblinded study from 1977, published in Japanese, and nobody appears to have repeated it in the half-century since — so it is thin evidence rather than a settled answer. But it is the evidence that exists, and we would rather hand you a result that does not flatter us than pretend the question is open. What is better supported is that softer bristles are the safer choice for gum tissue (Ranzan, Muniz and Rösing, 2019), and that how you brush matters more than what the bristles are made of.
Put together, that is an unglamorous conclusion: within the soft range, what the bristle is made of barely moves the plaque number, and your technique moves it a lot. If you are choosing between these two brushes on cleaning power, you are optimising the variable that matters least. Choose on what you are willing to put against that tissue twice a day, and on what happens to the brush when you are done with it.

So which one should you buy?
If what you want is to stop throwing a plastic handle in the bin every two months, and you are not troubled by nylon and glue in your mouth, a nylon-bristled bamboo brush does that job and costs very little. It is a real improvement on a supermarket plastic brush and we are not going to pretend it is worthless. Just buy it knowing what it is: a plastic-bristled brush with a wooden handle.
If the bristle and the glue are the part you actually cared about — because your mouth is the most absorbent tissue you own and you would rather know what is touching it — then boar is the answer to a question the handle was never going to settle. That is the honest split. It is not eco versus not-eco; it is which of the three decisions you are trying to change.

What are the trade-offs of boar bristles?
Boar bristle is not vegan. It is a by-product of pig farming, and no framing makes it otherwise. If that rules it out for you, it rules it out, and the plant-based bristle usually offered instead is the castor-oil nylon described above rather than a genuinely non-polymer alternative — a different trade-off, not a straightforwardly better one.
Natural hair also holds water, so the brush wants to stand upright and air-dry between uses, and a sealed plastic travel case is the worst place you could keep it. That is one extra step compared with nylon, which does not care. Expect a loose bristle or two in the first few uses; expect some variation in colour and stiffness between batches, because hair is not extruded to a tolerance. The uncoated handle darkens over the weeks as tannins oxidise. None of that is deterioration, but all of it surprises people, which is why it is here rather than in a returns policy.

Is bamboo the same as boar bristle?
No, and they are not competing options either. Bamboo is a handle material and boar bristle is a bristle material, so a single brush can have both — ours does. The comparison people are usually reaching for is between a bamboo handle fitted with nylon bristles and a bamboo handle fitted with boar bristles, which is a genuine difference in what touches your gums.
