You pop the used head off your electric toothbrush, hold it over the bin, and stop. It feels wrong to bin it — it's small, it's mostly plastic, surely it recycles? But it also clearly isn't going in the plastic bin with the milk bottles. So it sits on the windowsill with the others, in the small pile of heads nobody quite knows what to do with. Why can't electric toothbrush heads go in the recycling bin?
Electric toothbrush heads can't be recycled kerbside for two reasons: they're smaller than sorting machinery can capture, and they're made of bonded mixed materials that can't be separated at a standard plant. A recycling facility sorts by size and by material stream. A brush head fails on both counts — it slips through the screens meant for bottles and tubs, and even if it didn't, it's several materials fused into one small object.
Pull a head apart in your mind and the problem is obvious. The bristles are a polyamidethe polymer family nylon belongs to, anchored into the head with tiny metal staples; the head body is a different plastic again; and on many heads there's a coloured wear-indicator dye and a plastic shaft that clips to the motor. Sorting that into clean single-material streams by hand isn't economic, and machines can't do it at all.

This is why heads dropped loose into a recycling bin don't get recycled — they get screened out as contamination and follow the residual waste to landfill or incineration. Putting a brush head in the kerbside recycling bin doesn't recycle it; it just routes it there the long way. What actually happens to heads in a take-back scheme?
Specialist and brand-run take-back schemes collect used brushes and heads and downcycle them — the materials are separated and reprocessed into lower-grade uses, not turned back into new toothbrush heads. This is a real improvement over landfill, and worth using if you have a powered brush. It's just important to know what "recycled" means here: used once more, at a lower grade, not looped back into the same product.
There are two routes, and it's worth being precise about each. General oral-care programmes — the best-known is the TerraCyclea company that runs mail-in recycling programmes for hard-to-recycle waste, often brand-sponsored scheme run with Colgate — accept toothpaste tubes, floss containers and manual toothbrushes, then, in TerraCycle's words, clean and separate the waste "by material type" and recycle it into "raw formats" that manufacturers use to make new products TerraCycle Colgate programme. Note the gap: that programme explicitly excludes electric and battery toothbrushes, so it isn't the route for a powered brush's heads. For those, some brands run their own take-back. SURI — one of the best-known plant-based electric brands — sends a prepaid compostable mailer so you can post used heads back once you've saved three or four; its recycler then plucks the bristles, removes the copper clips, isolates the parts and extrudes them into a feedstock spool for 3D printing into other products such as home accessories SURI head recycling. Both divert heads from the bin; neither turns a head back into a head — and SURI notes it needs to reach "a critical mass" of returned heads first. Downcycling delays landfill by one product life. It doesn't close the loop.
Are plant-based or castor oil heads more recyclable?
No — castor oil bristle heads are no more recyclable than conventional ones, because a bio-based nylon presents the same sorting and separation problems as petroleum nylon. The word "plant-based" is doing work here that it can't cash. It describes where the bristle's carbon came from, not whether the head can be recycled or whether it breaks down.
It's worth keeping three claims separate, because marketing tends to blur them together. Recyclable, plant-based, and biodegradable are not the same, and a castor oil bristle head is at most the first two — and only "recyclable" via a special scheme, not your bin. A castor oil bristle is a nylon, so it isn't certified biodegradable, and regulators have said in writing that bio-based plastic is still plastic EU Plastic 2019 UK Bioplastic ruled not plastic-free 2022. A head that's harder to bin guilt-free is not the same as a head that isn't plastic.

Recyclability is an end-of-life story, not a what's-in-your-mouth one
Whether a head can be recycled says nothing about what it does while you're using it — and during use, every nylon bristle sheds microplastic into your mouth and your wastewater. The recycling question is about the head's afterlife. The chemical-safety question is about the two minutes, twice a day, that the bristle spends against your teeth and gums. Those are different problems, and a take-back scheme only addresses the first.
The shedding is measured, not hypothetical. Studies between 2023 and 2025 found manual toothbrushes releasing up to 39 microplastic particles released per day during simulated brushing (Aytulun et al. 2025) particles a day in one trial Aytulun et al. 2025 and into the thousands per cycle in another Fang 2023, with a projected 48,910 projected microplastic particles per person per year from toothbrush use alone particles per person per year from toothbrushes alone Protyusha et al. 2024. A head bound for a recycling scheme sheds exactly as much during its life as one bound for the bin. Recycling the head afterwards doesn't recover the particles it already left in you.
What actually reduces the waste
Two things genuinely move the needle. The first is not over-replacing: a head lasts about three months, and buying into a subscription that ships them faster than you wear them out just makes more heads to deal with. The second is choosing a brush with no plastic head to recycle in the first place.
That second route is the manual one. Boar bristle and horsehair are keratin, the bamboo handle is wood, and both biodegrade — there's no head to post back, no mixed-material puzzle, no scheme to sign up for.
