4 substances we don't use.
The Cotton Buds is free from Plastic stems, Polyester-blend tips, Chlorine-bleached cotton and Plastic packaging. Each exclusion is explained below with the reason.
Plastic stems
Polypropylene stems are still the norm, even in the UK after the EU ban (the UK didn’t adopt it). They take 300+ years to degrade. Found among the top-10 beach litter items across Europe (European Commission, 2019) — banned in the EU since 2021. Bamboo composts in months.
Polyester-blend tips
Many ’cotton’ buds blend polyester into the tips to reduce cost. The synthetic fibres shed microplastics during use (Napper & Thompson, 2016). Ours are 100% cotton, disclosed on the box.
Chlorine-bleached cotton
Most mass-market cotton is chlorine-bleached for whiteness — residual dioxins can remain in the fibre. We use unbleached or peroxide-bleached cotton only.
Plastic packaging
Cardboard box. No shrink-wrap, no cellophane window, no inner plastic bag.

Getting started.
Open one pack at a time
The box contains 10 individually packed bundles of 100. Keep the rest sealed for freshness and hygiene.
Use as normal
Same as any cotton bud. Makeup application, skincare, cleaning small surfaces. The bamboo stem is stiffer than plastic — more control, less flex.
Dispose responsibly
Home compost or general waste. The bamboo stem composts in weeks, the cotton tips biodegrade fully. Never flush — even biodegradable buds can block pipes.
The first 3–6 months weeks.
First pack open
Bamboo stems feel noticeably stiffer than the plastic ones you’re used to. The cotton tips are the same softness. You’ll go through about 2–3 per day for typical use.
First few packs done
You’ve stopped noticing the difference. The bamboo stems are now just how cotton buds feel. You’ve used 100–200 buds and barely dented the box.
Box running low
At typical daily use, 1000 buds last 3–6 months. The sealed packs in the box are still fresh. Time to reorder.

It’s a bulk pack — 10 boxes of 100. Works out well if you use them daily.
Yes. 100% cotton, no synthetic fibres mixed in.
Yes. The cotton tips are soft enough for applying and removing makeup, cleaning up eyeliner, etc.
Like all cotton buds, these aren’t recommended for ear canals. They’re designed for makeup, cleaning, and general use.
Compost the bamboo stem. The cotton tips biodegrade. Don’t flush them — even biodegradable ones shouldn’t go down the toilet.
It is. Cardboard box, no plastic window, no cellophane wrap. Some brands put a plastic window in the box so you can see the buds — we don’t.

Synthetic polymer products shed microplastic particles during use and disposal. Polypropylene cotton bud stems fragment into smaller particles over years in marine environments rather than biodegrading. Bamboo and cotton, by contrast, return to soil within months through natural microbial decomposition.

What's Actually in Conventional Oral Care
Cotton buds are personal-care chemistry-adjacent — same supply chain, same disclosure gaps. The polyester-blend tips most brands use are rarely declared on the box.
Fragrance: 3,000+ Substances on a One-Word Label
Some scented cotton buds carry undisclosed fragrance compounds. The same regulatory loophole that lets 'parfum' stay vague on a perfume bottle.
Formaldehyde in Cotton Processing
Conventional cotton can carry formaldehyde residues from anti-mildew treatments during shipping. Unbleached, untreated cotton skips the chain.
